Care and Maintenance
We believe jewelry should be loved and worn every day. Having said this, we do recommend taking off your jewelry when sleeping, swimming, gardening, lifting weights or coming in contact with chemicals. It’s important to clean your jewelry frequently, store it properly and inspect its condition often.
Most jewelry can be cleaned with a gentle soap, warm water and a clean, very soft toothbrush. Dry with a clean, soft cloth. Knotted, strung pearls and gemstone beads should be laid flat to dry completely before wearing. Beads and pearls that are frequently worn may require yearly restringing.
Jewelry should be stored separately in clean soft pouches or boxes to avoid contact with each other and protect them from dirt and light.
Overtime moving parts like bails, earring components and clasps may loosen. Please be sure to inspect your jewelry carefully before wearing.
Layering your jewelry is fun but please layer carefully. When jewelry rubs or knocks into each other the gold and gemstones can become scratched or damaged. Avoid situations where a hard gemstone like a diamond, sapphire or ruby would rub against soft gemstones like turquoise or pearls.
Aquamarine
Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are usually safe for both untreated and heat treated aquamarine as long as the gemstones are not heavily fractured. Warm soapy water and a soft brush is also a safe option.
Diamond
Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are generally safe for diamonds. At home clean your diamonds with warm soapy water and a soft brush or with a commercial jewelry cleaner.
Emerald
Many emeralds are treated with oil. Please don’t use an ultrasonic or steam on your emeralds, avoid contact with harsh chemicals and avoid sudden temperature changes. Clean with warm, soapy water.
Garnet
Ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe for garnets but steam cleaning is not recommended. Cleaning garnets with warm soapy water and a soft brush is always a safe choice.
Gold Care
Our jewelry is made from 18KY gold. It is a softer gold and can scratch slightly with routine daily wear. We anticipate this with our jewelry and believe the little light scratches that occur with daily wear only add to the beauty of our jewelry. They speak to the life of the piece much like the bumps, wrinkles and scars we acquire in life tell our stories. Clean your gold jewelry with a mild soap, warm water and a soft, clean toothbrush.
Moonstone
Heat and sudden temperature changes can break moonstones. Do not use steam or ultrasonic cleaning on your moonstones. Warm soapy water and a soft brush is always a safe cleaning option for moonstone. Protect your moonstone from rough wear and hard blows.
Opal
Opals are a beautiful gemstone, but also delicate. They are soft and high in water content, making them more susceptible to climate and temperature changes. Heat and prolonged exposure to light can cause tiny fractures to develop called crazing. We recommend you do not wear your opals in extreme temperatures or while participating in physical activities. Opals are susceptible to chemicals and you should avoid exposing opals to household cleaners, ultrasonic and steam cleaning. Wash your opals in warm soapy water.
Pearl
The beauty of your pearls comes from their lustrous nacre (outermost layer). Maintain this luster by following the golden rule of putting your pearls on last and taking them off first. Pearls are especially susceptible to chemicals so avoid makeup, perfumes, hair products, chlorine, and any other chemicals. When not wearing your pearls store them separate from you other jewelry to avoid scratching. For routine cleaning, clean with a very soft, dry cloth after each wearing. It is ok to occasionally wash your pearls with warm, soapy water. Dry with a very soft, clean cloth. After washing, strung pearls should be laid flat to completely before wearing. Never subject pearls to steam or ultrasonic cleaning.
Conch pearls may be light sensitive. Because of this they are known as “evening pearls”. To prevent the risk of discoloration please avoid prolonged exposure to light or heat in addition to the special care recommendations for pearls. Conch pearls are also delicate and susceptible to scratching and blows.
Sapphire
Both untreated and heat treated sapphire are durable and stable. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are usually safe. When in doubt, use warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals.
Spinel
While ultrasonic and steam cleaning is usually safe, it is always safe to clean spinel with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
Tanzanite
Avoid sudden temperature changes and harsh chemicals. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are never recommend for Tanzanite, instead clean your tanzanite with warm soapy water and a soft brush if necessary. Protect your tanzanite from rough wear and hard blows.
Tourmaline
Heat and sudden temperature changes may alter the color or cause fracturing in both untreated and heat treated tourmaline. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning. Clean your tourmaline with warm soapy water and a soft brush if necessary.
Turquoise
Turquoise is a soft stone, prone to scratching. It is often stabilized to increase durability. The care and cleaning of both untreated and stabilized turquoise is the same. Store your turquoise separately in soft pouches or boxes. Chemicals, cosmetics, hot water and even prolonged exposure to sunlight may damage turquoise. Clean turquoise with warm soapy water and a soft, clean cloth. Do not steam or ultrasonic.
Zircon
Most zircon is heat treated. While the treatment’s stability is good, please avoid harsh chemicals, abrasives and strong UV light.
Gemstone Treatments
As a member of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, Leigh Maxwell has made a promise to comply with all laws applicable to the jewelry we sell and to accurately describe our products. In compliance with Federal Trade Commission guidelines, we disclose treatments on our gemstones. In doing this we aim to protect our customers, increase confidence in the jewelry industry, and promote lawful business practices.
Treated gemstones are not synthetic (ie. lab grown) or “fake”. Many treatments are considered standard in the industry. Emeralds are almost always oiled to improve their clarity and turquoise is very frequently stabilized to increase its durability. Many treatments are considered stable, meaning Sometimes, special care is needed for treated stones. That care is outlined in the “Care and Maintenance” section at the top of this page. It’s important to understand the gemstones you are purchasing. If you have any questions on the treatments of our gemstones please contact us.
